The D.A.R was established in 1890 as a women’s organization promoting education, historic preservation, and patriotism.
In order to be admitted into the D.A.R., one must establish that they are a descendant of a patriot from the American Revolution. Often, proving patriot lineage is rather straightforward. Other times, the proof is difficult and the documents seem to have vanished.
Many of the original 13 colonies were not required to produce birth certificates. Fortunately, many of the colonies had churches within their boundaries with outstanding Christening, marriage, and death records. Women did not often own land and were not as commonly listed in wills, they became the elusive ancestor.
