A genealogist establishes a family tree based on documents. Each member on your family tree has documents available to establish milestones in their lives. For instance, birth, death, and marriage certificates give us a lot of information. Some family members did not leave much of a paper trail. If a relative died young, never married, never owned land, and so forth, they will be harder to trace. Sometimes they establish a nickname as adults and the researcher is searching under the lawful name they were given. Genealogists refer to these individuals as “brick walls” as they are not easily traceable.
Fortunately, we live in a time when the human genome was recently mapped. This great scientific endeavor allows scientists to learn a great deal about what makes us similar and different. We can collect a DNA sample from an individual, through a saliva test. We then look in DNA databases for individuals who have identical strands across one or several of our 23 pairs of chromosomes. DNA is found in the chromosomes of the nucleus in each cell. Humans receive 23 chromosomes from their mother and 23 chromosomes from their father, making up 23 pairs, plus 1 pair determining the gender of the person.
When a person attaches their family tree to the DNA data results, we look for similar surnames to find how they are related. If there is no family tree attached, then further research can still result in the discovery of a close relative. DNA match results work like a compass, telling us if we are on the right search path, how close or far we are straying away from the correct match. Genetic genealogy is a relatively new and exciting field, giving genealogists one more tool in their toolbox.
